NIAGARA COLLEGE WELCOMES LARGEST INTAKE OF FIRST-YEAR JANUARY-START STUDENTS

Niagara College welcomes its largest-ever intake of first-year January-start students this week, as close to 800 new students start their college career.
The students will get their first taste of college life during January Orientation, Jan. 7 and 8. On Jan. 7, students at the Welland Campus will have a welcome session from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. in the Hamilton Room, followed by program information sessions. At the Niagara-on-the-Lake Campus on Jan. 8, the welcome session runs from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. in the Yerich Auditorium, with program information sessions from 11 a.m. to noon. A free lunch will be offered from noon to 1 p.m. in the Niagara-on-the-Lake Campus Cafeteria, followed by a keynote presentation by Dr. Karyn Gordon, one of North America's leading authorities on youth/Generation Y. The presentation will be followed by a draw for a 42" plasma television. Transportation between campuses will be provided for those wishing to attend the afternoon activities at the Niagara-on-the-Lake Campus.
Most Niagara College programs offer accelerated January-start formats with semesters running into the summer. The winter semester also provides another intake for many competitive programs, offering flexibility to students upgrading their pre-admission requirements.
Applications for 2010 January-starts saw a 44 percent jump over last year. Full-time program classes start Monday, Jan. 11.
Limited spaces are still available for a wide range of programs. Students can enrol in a January-start program until Friday, Jan. 15. With 8,000 full-time students, Niagara College offers more than 90 diploma, baccalaureate degrees and advanced level programs at campuses in Welland, Niagara-on-the-Lake, Niagara Falls and St. Catharines. Areas of specialization include food and wine sciences, advanced technology, applied health and community safety, and the College is home to the globally-recognized Niagara Culinary Institute and Niagara College Teaching Winery. In 2008, Niagara College launched an unprecedented $90 million campus redevelopment project, which is scheduled for completion in 2011.
