Niagara Charity Raises Over $255,000 for the Community.
ST. CATHARINES, ON – The Wise Guys have gone to bat again for the Niagara community – and hit another home run.
The long-running Niagara-based charity held five fundraising events to help raise money for different worthy causes and charities in Niagara. This year, the Wise Guys marked their 26th anniversary by raising over $255,000 for the local community – a brand new record.
Throughout October and November, 17 local agencies will benefit from the monies raised. That includes the Hotel Dieu Shaver ($75,000 over three years), Niagara Health System ($30,000), Brock Rowing ($30,000), Heartland Forest ($25,000), The Hope Centre ($20,000), and Bethlehem Housing & Support Services ($20,000), just to name a few. (All grants are for capital projects or programs.)
Doug Smith, the chair and co-founder of the Wise Guys Charity Fund, says this year’s landmark tally was a real team effort.
“I can’t say enough about our organizers and committee members, and how hard they worked to get our events up and running,” he says. “With all their hard work and effort, we’ve raised over a half a million dollars in the past two years. That commitment has allowed us to raise and roll back over $2.755-million since we started back in 1991.”
Dozens of volunteers took part in this year’s events which included an Auction & Dinner Party, the Wise Guys Charity Celebrity Golf Tournament at Lookout Point Golf Club in Fonthill, and their 10th Annual Legends Boxing Night at the Merritton Community Centre in St. Catharines. The Wise Guys have also continued to change with the times, adding new events such as their Chuck Smith Pub Night at Romby’s Tavern & Smokehouse, the Wise Girls Tee Party at the St. Catharines Golf & Country Club, and the recent Valvano Big Ride on October 2nd.
“All five of our events were incredibly successful this year,” Doug says. “The Wise Girls Tee Party really came through with flying colours, raising over $50,000 in just the second year of the tournament. It’s successes like these that bode well for the Wise Guys’ future – and our ability to help the people who really need it in Niagara.”
